In 2050 a radical but logical step will have to be taken to save the planet... to outlaw the consumption of beef and the mass production of livestock.
Worldwide, farmed animals produce more greenhouse gas emissions than the world’s entire transport system. Beef prohibition will drastically reduce the more potent greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide (produced by cattle flatulence and waste). Methane has around 25 times the global warming impact of CO2 while nitrous oxide has 296 times the Global Warming Potential.
Livestock uses 30% of the earth’s entire land surface – mostly pasture but also including 33% of the global arable land, used to producing their feed. Forests are cleared to create new pastures, being a major driver of deforestation whilst herds cause wide-scale land degradation and damage the Earth’s increasingly scarce water resources. Livestock waste contributes significantly to acid rain and to water pollution. The human cost through consumption is cancer, heart disease and obesity.
In 2050 action will have to be taken – no beef, less shit, makes a happy planet!
